Prioritize Immediate Safety
- Do not attempt to physically intervene unless the individual is in imminent danger and you are trained to do so.
- Maintain a calm, non-confrontational approach and create physical space.
Mesa Specific Information
Notify Campus Support Systems
Once emergency responders are on the way (and only if it is safe to do so):
- Notify your Responsible College Official and immediate supervisor.
- Employees may contact the Student Health or Mental Health Services office for consultation.
- Do not leave the individual alone unless directed by responders.
Supportive Measures (If the Situation Is NOT Immediately Dangerous)
If the individual is distressed but not presenting an immediate safety threat:
- Express concern and encourage them to contact mental-health services.
- For students, refer or walk them to Student Health/Mental Health Services or TimelyCare (24/7 phone and video support).
- For employees, refer to Employee Relations or the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
Documentation and Follow-Up
- Report the incident to the Campus Behavioral Intervention Team/CARE Team through the college reporting portal.
- Maintain confidentiality consistent with FERPA, HIPAA, and district policy, recognizing where confidentiality exceptions due to safety are applicable.
- Follow supervisor guidance regarding workplace impacts or next steps.
