If There is a Sudden Death/Suicide:
If you discover an unresponsive person, witness a suicide attempt, or receive a report of imminent self-harm call College Police at 619-388-6405 and/or 911.
Prioritize Immediate Safety
Do not move the individual unless necessary for safety
Secure the Area
- Keep the area clear until emergency responders arrive.
- Preserve the scene for law enforcement if a death has occurred or is suspected.
- Do not share information broadly or post on social media
Mesa Specific Information
Notifications:
After contacting emergency responders, and only as appropriate:
- Notify your Responsible College Official and supervisor.
- College Police will coordinate with medical examiners, paramedics, and law enforcement.
- Communications must be managed through Communications and Public Relations and the Chancellor’s Office; no employee should issue independent public statements.
Mental-Health Coordination for Affected Students or Employees:
Following the immediate response:
- Student support should be coordinated through Student Health/Mental Health Services, including crisis counseling, referrals, and coordinated outreach.
- Employees may access Employee Relations provided EAP Crisis Support.
- The District will deploy appropriate mental-health support resources as needed.
Post-Incident Protocols:
- The Clery Officer, with College Police, will facilitate required Clery Act reporting, scene management, and coordination with external agencies.
- Supervisors should ensure affected faculty and staff receive guidance on managing classroom or workplace impacts.
- The Campus Behavioral Intervention Team/CARE Team should receive a report for follow-up and monitoring.
