Utility Failure

If There is a Utility Failure:

For detailed information regarding Evacuation on campus, please refer to the Building Emergency Evacuation Plan (BEEP)

Remember:

If Evacuation is necessary, ALWAYS evacuate first. When safe and able call College Police at 619-388-6405 and/or 911.

Prioritize Immediate Safety

In the event of a utility failure—such as a power outage, gas leak, water supply interruption, or elevator failure—take the following steps to protect yourself and minimize disruption:

  • Stay Calm & Assess: Remain calm and evaluate the situation. Note whether the failure is restricted to your immediate room/office or if it is a widespread building outage.
  • Inspect for Immediate Hazards: Be highly cautious and look for potential secondary dangers. Check for exposed electrical wiring, sparking, flooding, or the smell of natural gas.
  • Evacuate if Threatened: If you smell gas, see sparks, or detect any other threat to life safety, vacate the affected area immediately, close the doors behind you to isolate the hazard, and warn others to stay clear.
  • Assist Others: Check on your colleagues and students, particularly those with limited mobility or special needs who may be stranded in dark areas or require assistance navigating darkened stairwells.
  • Stay Informed: Monitor official campus emergency alert systems or notifications on your mobile device for updates on restoration timelines or class/work adjustments.

Mesa Specific Information

All utility failures must be reported immediately to ensure the proper facilities and emergency teams are dispatched:

Emergency/Hazardous Situations: If the utility failure presents an immediate safety risk (e.g., gas leak, live wires, trapped elevator passenger), call College Police (619-388-6405) or 911.

Non-Hazardous Outages: If there is no immediate safety threat but a utility is down (e.g., a simple power outage in an office during the day, a clogged drain, or localized AC failure), notify your supervisor and use the Facilities Work Order System for routine repairs, maintenance, or service needs.
